Hello! My name is Audrey Steadman, I am a Junior from Tampa, FL majoring in Clinical Professions through FSU’s interdisciplinary Medical Sciences Degree Program – basically a fancy way of saying I’m pre-med.
This summer I will be volunteering with Tallahassee’s International Rescue Committee as a medical advocate. In this role, I will be accompanying refugees to their medical appointments to help them fill out paper work, speak with medical staff, and advocate for their medical rights. I plan to enter into the medical field after graduating, so I am excited to gain a more global understanding of medicine and learn more about the work that still needs to be done in terms of bridging healthcare disparities.
I expect this experience to be challenging, yet rewarding. The mountains of paperwork that come with medical care and insurance are not for the faint of heart, as I have witnessed from working at FSU Primary Health this semester. However, serving others selflessly in any capacity I am able to is the reason that I pursued a path in the medical field, and I am ready to aid in the healthcare field beyond simply providing clinical care.
