Greetings!
I am very happy with my progress towards my goals. I have gotten a glorious amount of additional experience with conservation and research from the one program I have completed, as well as a bit more insight into what life is for a career conservationist. The biggest step towards my goals, is refreshing my mindset to better prepare myself for university. I have more motivation than ever before and learned a lot about myself. That said, there have been some challenging parts to meeting my goals. It has become increasingly apparent to me that there is no one “career in conservation”. Naturally there is always variation on any field, but due to the nature (pun not intended) of this work, the qualifications, pay, duties, benefits, and environment are wildly inconsistent across different conservationists. Because of this, I am having a hard time learning more about the field.
I have no plans to adjust my goals; they are still meaningful to me, and I am confident I will be able to reach, if not surpass them, come August. Moving forward, I am going to try to continue to aggressively learn as much as I can this field, while getting more and more practical experience. My next program starts early February, and I am very much looking forward to it!
Until next time, Owen Jackson.
