Life in PDX

Going into move-in day, I knew things would be daunting. Portland is 3,000 miles away from my home and I had never made a transition this big before. I’m a few days in, and things are going great! As I am writing this, I am preparing my room and myself for a peaceful and busy Shabbat.

For the first few weeks, the other Tivnu participants and I are going through lots of orientation. We’ve been talking about grocery shopping in a COVID-safe Portland, keeping a Kosher kitchen, consent, chore responsibilities, and more! Usually after a morning of orientation talks, we make lunch together and either take a walk, or attend more programming. My schedule has been surprisingly packed; I’ve found it’s really nice to sit and drink tea with friends at the end of the day.

I’m living in a very large house just outside of downtown Portland with 12 other people. I’m sharing an awesome room with one of my new friends and I’m becoming accustomed to the lack of central air conditioning in this new city.

I’ve been doing a lot of cooking with my new friends. Yesterday, I made vegan and gluten free brownies for the house and people loved them. At dinner time we made salad, tofu, pasta, roasted cauliflower, and mushrooms. I’m having such a good time and I’m learning so much about myself.
