From Family Calls to Community Impact: How Small Habits Shape My Journey

By: Lizzie Alba

When people think about making an impact, they often imagine large projects, major achievements, or life-changing events. While those things can certainly make a difference, I have learned that impact is often built through small habits that we practice consistently. The routines, values, and behaviors that we exercise every day influence not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us. As I prepare to study and intern abroad in Madrid, Spain, I have been reflecting on the habits and values that positively contribute to myself, my inner circle, my community, and the world around me.

One of the most important habits I have developed is staying connected with my family. Every day, after I finish my morning routine and get ready for the day, I make it a priority to call or talk with members of my family, especially my mom, dad, and aunt. Although this may seem like a small action, it has had a tremendous impact on my life. These daily conversations remind me that I am loved, supported, and encouraged no matter where I am. They help me maintain a strong connection to my roots and give me motivation to continue working toward my goals.

This habit positively contributes to myself because it strengthens my emotional well-being. Knowing that I have people who believe in me gives me confidence during difficult moments and reminds me that I am never facing challenges alone. At the same time, these conversations contribute to my inner circle because they help maintain strong family relationships. By making time for my loved ones every day, I am able to offer support, share experiences, and stay involved in each other’s lives despite physical distance.

As I prepare for my time abroad in Spain, I plan to continue this habit. Living in another country will be an exciting opportunity, but it will also involve challenges and adjustments. Staying connected with my family will help me keep my spirits high and allow me to be the best version of myself both in the classroom and at my internship. Knowing that I have a strong support system back home will give me the confidence to embrace new experiences and grow from them.

Another value that plays a significant role in my life is giving back to the community. Service has always provided me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. There is something incredibly rewarding about helping others and seeing the positive impact that even small actions can have on someone’s day. Whether it is volunteering, mentoring, or participating in community initiatives, I believe that serving others helps strengthen the bonds that connect us as human beings.

This summer, I will have the opportunity to put this value into practice while interning with YMCA in Madrid, Spain. During my internship, I will work with children and families from communities in need. I will have the chance to assist professionals in programs focused on family education, children’s education, and recreational activities. Through these experiences, I hope to contribute to creating a supportive environment where families can learn, grow, and thrive.

I believe this experience will positively impact both the community I serve and my own personal development. Working with families from a different cultural background will expand my cultural sensitivity and empathy. It will teach me new ways of understanding people’s experiences and challenges while helping me recognize the importance of adapting support services to different cultural contexts.

This opportunity also aligns closely with my future career goals. As someone who hopes to become a Marriage and Family Therapist, learning how to support children and families is incredibly valuable. I anticipate gaining practical skills, observing professional techniques, and developing a deeper understanding of how family dynamics influence individual well-being. These lessons will not only help me serve communities abroad but will also allow me to better serve my own community in the future.

Ultimately, my impact is shaped by both the relationships I nurture and the service I provide. By staying connected with my family and dedicating myself to helping others, I am building habits that positively affect myself, my inner circle, my community, and, hopefully, the world around me. While these actions may seem small on their own, together they create a meaningful foundation for growth, compassion, and positive change.
