Starting at The Ritz

My first week at the Ritz Theatre and Museum was a jump straight into preparations for their upcoming gallery show! Throughout the week, I was able to meet and speak with artists from the local community and help them bring their visions to life in the space. I never knew how much went into the process, but it was incredibly meaningful to help bring an artistic space to life for the community to enjoy!

I also had the opportunity to explore the museum and learn more about the layout of the facility and its history. The Ritz Theatre and Museum has been the premier Black theatre in Jacksonville— once known as the Harlem of the South— since 1929. It has been serving as a Black history museum as well as still functioning as a theatre since 1998! Being able to join this powerful legacy has been a wonderful experience thus far.

I am currently enjoying the process of doing more research in order to develop a formal script to be used by docent volunteers later this summer!
