I know that it has been going on for a quite a while and it has lost some luster among media outlets and their listeners, but I still believe that the Israel-Palestine conflict is one that needs to be at the forefront of the news cycle, specifically the amount of collateral damage that has resulted from the conflict. Just yesterday, there was an Israeli strike on a mosque and school in Gaza that killed at least 93 Palestinians. According to local officials, these buildings were sheltering displaced Palestinians when they were attacked through the night on Saturday. Israel has since confirmed it carried out the strike, calling these buildings a “”Hamas command post,” and stated that several fighters were eliminated.
This story is just one of many in regards to this conflict that has been going on a long time, and it is repetitive. This conflict has led to exponentially more damage to Palestine than Israel infrastructrually and casualty-wise, with more than half of Gaza’s homes being destroyed, nearly all schools destroyed, and less than half of the hospitals are functioning. I need to be very clear on this. Due to the October 7th massacre caused by Hamas, I believe Israel has a right to actively pursue and eliminate terrorists that are Hamas. That does not mean deliberately killing innocents who are in the way of Hamas terrorists should ever be caught in the crossfire.
And yes, while this conflict is receiving plenty of coverage in the media, what is not being covered about this conflict on the United States side is unacceptable. I understand that it is an election year, and that the primary candidates for the Democratic and Republican party are busy, but resolving this conflict should be one of the main things they are running on. It is going to take more to solving this conflict than condemning one side or the other. It is going to take political will and sacrifice to successfully bring a ceasefire between the two opponents. In truth, this is a very complicated and deep-rooted conflict that I’m sure is intimidating as a candidate to address when trying to win an election, which is why I believe it has not been talked about in specific detail. Hopefully media and the public pressures the two candidates into voicing their own opinions on the matter, which will be the first step in trying to solve the Israel-Palestine conflict, rather than just containing it.
