I start off at my hotel, which is on the edge of a well-known tourist area called Thamel. After eating breakfast I walk about 25 minutes to the school where I volunteer. I saw a lot of local places and crossed the Bishnumati River. After my time at the school is done I walk about 10 minutes to the Kathmandu Durbar Square, where the Kathmandu Palace is located. I have been there many times before and since it’s close to the school I like to go there for lunch. Then I decided to go to the Narayanhiti Royal Palace, where the Royal Family of Nepal used to live and the site of the 2001 massacre in which several members of the Royal Family died. It is now a museum open to the public, so I went and spent about 2 and a half hours there. It has been one of my favorite places I’ve been to in Kathmandu so far. After I went there I walked about 7 minutes to the Garden of Dreams, a famous place in Kathmandu. Then I headed back to my hotel to rest, before heading for dinner a couple hours later. For dinner I walk around Thamel and find a local restaurant, which is always delicious.
One main difference between my routine before departing for my experience and now is that I am in the center of the tourist areas. Even though my hometown of Naples is a vacation spot, I do not live near the popular areas, so I have the luxury of peace and calm. However, here the noise never stops, which does not bother me, but it is a different experience. I also do a lot of touristy things here. I go to museums, and popular parks and restaurants, which is something I do not do at home. Somethings about my life do not change no matter where I go. I always like to stop at local cafes to get coffee and people watch. I do this almost everyday in Kathmandu and when I am back home I do it maybe once a week. As I near the end of my time here, I appreciate the places and things I’ve done and I will miss the routine I created when I go home.
