The Dublin Diaries: Final Edition

As I bid farewell to my summer project at University College Dublin, I am filled with a mix of nostalgia and accomplishment. This summer has been an incredible journey of learning and growth, both academically and personally. Conducting research on integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) into digital forensic investigations has not only deepened my understanding of advanced technologies but also highlighted the global challenges and opportunities within the field of digital forensics.

Living and studying in Dublin provided a unique perspective on how different countries approach technology and law enforcement. The collaborative environment at UCD, combined with the diverse cultural experiences, has broadened my worldview. I now appreciate the importance of international cooperation in tackling complex issues like cybercrime. This experience has reinforced my belief that solutions to global problems require a blend of local expertise and international collaboration. As I return home, I carry with me a renewed sense of purpose and a broader outlook on how technology can be harnessed to improve justice systems worldwide.

Blog 8b: CapStone Project Update

My Capstone Project is progressing steadily as I work on adapting my summer research into a framework applicable to the American justice system. The integration of LLMs into digital forensics has shown promising results, and I am excited to explore its potential benefits for law enforcement in the United States.

What is going well is the foundational research I conducted in Ireland, which provides a solid base for the Capstone Project. The methodologies and insights gained are proving invaluable as I tailor the project to address the specific challenges faced by the U.S. justice system. I have successfully outlined the primary objectives and begun drafting the sections based on my summer work.

However, there are some challenges as well. Translating the findings and methodologies from an Irish context to an American one involves addressing different legal frameworks and operational protocols. Additionally, ensuring that the LLMs’ outputs are transparent and explainable for legal admissibility remains a critical hurdle. Despite these challenges, I am confident that with continued effort and guidance, I can develop a robust Capstone Project that bridges my international research with practical applications in the U.S. justice system.
