Hey everyone!
I hope you are all doing well and staying safe and healthy. This week for me was one of the craziest I’ve had yet, and through this week, I was shown the amazing community that High Meadows Camp has given me.
The cultural environment at camp is very relaxed and tight-knit, because we all work together to ensure the kids have a wonderful, safe experience at camp where they can make bonds to last a lifetime. It is one that it is easy to get to know everyone you work with, and therefore become friends with all your co-counselors. We therefore end up relying on each other, and becoming one another’s best friends.
I feel as though I definitely was welcomed with open arms into this new community of mine. I was hospitalized for pneumonia last week, and I truly saw how my new community came together to check on me and see if I was doing well, asking when I would feel better so I could come back to work soon. I was given so much support and understanding from my new friends and camp family, and I feel truly loved and embraced by all of my coworkers.
This experience definitely shaped my understanding of community, because it is not only the people in a place that defines what community is, but it is how they come together when one member has fallen that shows who your community is. I am doing much better now, and hope I can get back to work soon, and home to my work community.
Remember to take care of yourself throughout your experience, because your health and safety matter!
Until next time,
Nadia Soifer
