The Dublin Diaries: Mapping my Life

Hello everyone! As part of the Global Scholars Program at Florida State University (FSU), I’m sharing my experiences studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland. This week, I’ll be mapping the spaces I inhabit on a daily and weekly basis and comparing them to my usual spheres back home.

Daily and Weekly Spaces in Dublin

In Dublin, my routine revolves around several key locations:

  1. University College Dublin (UCD):
  • Research Lab: My primary workspace where I collaborate with my program instructor and a PhD student to develop a custom large language model (LLM) for digital forensics.
  • Library and Study Areas: Places where I delve into research materials and prepare for our project meetings.
  1. Student Accommodation:
  • Residence Hall: My home base, where I unwind, socialize with other UCD students, and sometimes participate in group study sessions.
  1. Local Cafés and Restaurants:
  • Cafés: Spots where I grab coffee, work on assignments, and meet friends.
  • Restaurants: Places to explore Irish cuisine and enjoy meals with new friends.
  1. Exploration and Leisure:
  • City Center: Frequent visits to explore Dublin’s rich history, cultural sites, and vibrant nightlife.
  • Parks and Green Spaces: Enjoying outdoor activities and relaxation.
  1. Events and Activities:
  • Concert Venues: Recently attended a Mount Joy concert at the Olympia Theatre, which was incredibly fun.

Comparison to Spheres Back Home

In Tallahassee at FSU, my daily and weekly routines were centered around:

  1. FSU Campus:
  • Classrooms and Lecture Halls: Attending classes and seminars for my Criminology and International Affairs major.
  • Library and Study Spaces: Conducting research and studying for exams.
  1. Off-Campus Housing:
  • Apartment: My personal space for relaxation and study.
  1. Local Hangouts:
  • Cafés and Restaurants: Similar to Dublin, I frequented local spots for coffee and meals.
  1. Leisure Activities:
  • Sports Facilities and Parks: Engaging in physical activities and enjoying the outdoors.
  • Social Events: Participating in campus events and gatherings with friends.

Conclusion

Mapping my spaces in Dublin reveals both similarities and differences compared to my life back at FSU. While the core elements remain—academic spaces, social hubs, and leisure activities—the vibrant and historic backdrop of Dublin adds a unique flavor to my daily experiences. As I continue my research and exploration, I’m grateful for the opportunities to immerse myself in this new environment and the solidarity I feel within this community.
