Ever since arriving in Cusco, I have seen a lot of festivals. Many of those festivals I stumbled across on accident on the way back from my volunteering to my room! My two favorite festivals so far are the Corpus Christi and Inti Raymi festivals.
Inti Raymi is an old tradition still celebrated by the indigenous people of Peru. It is celebrated every year through the reenactment of old traditions of honoring Inti, the sun god in the Inca religion. During the festival, there was a lot of folklore music and dances, which makes this one of the most important festivals in Cusco.
Being able to experience these festivals, as well as being able to volunteer and meet new people has made me feel like part of a new community. It has made me realize how tight-knit people can be, especially when coming together and celebrating two very different festivals. It is truly an eye-opening experience!
