Starting at the office was so much more seemless than I had been expecting. Since I am working for the State Attorney’s Office, I had to get finger printing done and sign a lot of paperwork, but luckily I did this before my first day. When I first got there, I met with a really nice lady who asked me about my interests and got me connected with the lawyer that she felt was best fit.
I originally thought my specific legal interests (mental health law) were really different than anything they could offer, but she informed me about the State’s involvement with court hearings for Baker Acts and specialized courts that aid at risk individuals, like Comprehensive Treatment Court. In fact, on my first day there was a CTC hearing that I got to attend and ask the judge questions about! I might even do my research on the effectiveness of such treatment courts. I have been working for a few weeks now and am really loving everything, regardless of its relevance to my specific interests.
