A Day in the Life

Hello Again

My everyday routine here is quite nice. Since I’m at home for the summer working for the global cause of hunger, i’m able to wake up to leave before 12:30 for my dry goods sorting shift at Second Harvest, which starts at 1:00. If I’m meeting with a coordinator or director, those are usually held earlier at around 11:00 so I leave earlier for that. The commute is around half an hour give or take and it’s been really nice to just get a coffee and drive through Orlando to get to the bank. Once I reach, there’s a brief orientation for any new volunteers and then we’re brought into the warehouse.

Because i’m somewhat of a regular, I get to work behind the sorting boxes where the conveyor belt is to lift, weigh, scan and put the boxes on the pallets. We take a water break around 2:30 and come back in 15 minutes later. Then we continue until 4:00.

The boxes are separated by family, non-food, drinks, and snacks. Any box that is not family fills up very quickly. We’re given pallets of donated goods from partners and it’s our duties to check the quality and expiration dates. Family boxes include anything that is used in proper cooking, while everything else is ready to eat, we fill these family boxes up to the brim to exceed 35 pounds ideally. I really like volunteering with the bank, and especially getting to hear from higher ups on how things are run on a higher level.

I’ve recently started a part time job which takes up the days I don’t volunteer with the bank, so when I’m not volunteering i’m still working!
