Recent News Story

A recent story I have read about in the news is the wildfires in Maui, HI. The pictures of the aftermath of this wildfire is truly devastating and has been named the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history with over 89 casualties. In addition to casualties, this fire has truly wreaked havoc on the island of Maui with numerous news stations stating that the aftermath looks like an “post-apocalyptic disaster” with ash scattered throughout the city and cars and buildings severely scorched from the flames. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/live-blog/maui-fires-live-updates-hawaii-death-toll-missing-search-rescue-rcna99570

This news story is extremely touching because I have wrapped up a summer C course at FSU in the Public Administration department concerning natural disasters. After researching and learning about numerous natural disasters throughout the history of the world, the class was very heavy. However, we researched the response and recovery of these disasters and identified how countries learned from previous mistakes to prevent more catastrophic damage from future disasters around the world. I hope previous wildfire disaster knowledge can be applied to the situation in Maui to help save lives and help with restoration efforts, except it is also extremely sad how present of a danger natural disasters pose towards us all across the world despite all of the data, knowledge, and technological advances we have seen.

For an update on my capstone project, I am still working on my draft proposal. I will have this complete by the end of the summer and will be ready to start further research.
