Gender Inequality in the Community

A structural inequality that I have become more attuned to within my community is gender inequality. Some societal conditions that are exacerbating these inequalities are gender biases, gender-based discrimination, gender norms, and societal expectations. During my experience I have witnessed this first-hand both for others and for myself as well. The picture provided shows me working with two other women from my organization and us going to help out at “The Oasis Center for Women & Girls” which is a non-profit organization in which women and girls are valued, supported, and celebrated. Me being the only male in my group there was tension when I first entered there. Some didn’t want to acknowledge the fact that I was there merely because i’m a guy even though I find the cause of empowering young girls and women to be the best they can be very necessary. I believe that if we all accepted each other for who we are and treated each other with the same amount of respect and face value then we wouldn’t need special centers for specific genders or would have to worry about gender inequality in general.

My subject for my Capstone Project will be about poverty in low-income communities. I will address the main causes of poverty and the solutions that have come up for it. I will also address the key impacts that it has not only on those directly involved but those on the outside looking in as well.
