The structural inequalities I have been in contact with here are a lack of financial stability, unequal pay, and opportunity, or corruption within the criminal system within the entire community. I can write a book on countries being “behind” and what it does to them compared to what we know and our knowledge. There isContinue reading “Structural Inequalities”

Costa Rica, Caco, and Structural Inequalities
Structural inequalities that keep popping up while here in Costa Rica is the inequalities that are present due to the tourism that is present here in Costa Rica. This can be seen extensively when it comes to the prices of foods and other commodities which more often than not cost more than they would inContinue reading “Costa Rica, Caco, and Structural Inequalities”
Describing my Cultural Community
In my experience in the Philippines, my cultural “environment” has been split into two. The first is the local community I interact with on a weekly basis when participating in volunteer projects and when we go diving in the locally governed marine protected areas. The second cultural environment consists of the staff and volunteers thatContinue reading “Describing my Cultural Community”
Reflecting on my experience
So far, it’s been one week since I completed my experience. I made excellent connections, in particular a remote research position with a medical student. My experience started a bit before the blogs, the first two weeks being entirely virtual. Albeit, it was also only roughly 2/3 hours a day as opposed to the allContinue reading “Reflecting on my experience”

I also want to celebrate the fact that I have enjoyed this portion of my experience and have made friends with amazing people.

Solidarity, at its core, is a collective effort to support and stand alongside individuals or communities who are marginalized, oppressed, or facing social injustices. It is a vital aspect of activism that fosters unity, strength, and resilience inContinue reading “Solidarity in Activism”
A day in my life!
Here is a photo of a strawberry pie Dillon, Austin, and I made this week!
Growing up
Throughout my mentorship with Kateryna,* I have become attuned to a certain structural inequality within her family unit. Kat traveled to the US with her mother and younger sister, Elena, who is 1 year old. Her mother has been tirelessly searching for a job, which often leaves Kat in charge of Emma while her motherContinue reading “Growing up”
Solidarity for All Ages
Solidarity looks like, in my community, the children getting along and bonding over sports. Even though everyone has different things going on in their personal lives, when we have our BBBS events, regardless of differences, everyone comes together and has a good time doing physical activity.
