Recap and What’s Next by Taylor Haul

To me the quote, the project is never finished, represents that there is always more work that can be done in research and findings for future perspectives, ideas, and inventions. There is always growth that can be done in research and revisions made with more knowledge that is expanded upon. This quote relates to my community engagement and research as practicing patient care and treatment never hits a plateau. It is always becoming better as there are advancements in medicine and training practices. It is always a good idea to keep learning and demonstrating better patient care and support every day. It also relates to my research on women being underrepresented in the orthopedic community because solutions are needed to be found to prevent bias and stereotypes in the future. Although through interviewing I did find orthopedics is a male dominated field and many women can be intimidated by the stereotype around it, answers are still needed to find out exactly why. Gaining perspectives from a variety of people and research articles can help narrow down possible reasons and find answers we are looking for. Something I am proud of this summer was my ability to interview doctors and see firsthand their eyes opening to this problem and them brainstorming reasons why it could be happening. By bringing this topic to their attention with my interviews, I can really tell I got them thinking and wanting to make even their own office more diverse to increase comfortability and patient care all around. It was special to me that I was able to help bring light to this and increase awareness amongst doctors. It was also neat to gain perspectives from both a male and female doctor on this issue and see how their answers to certain questions compared or differed. I would like to keep shadowing in doctors’ offices to keep gaining experience, and I would also like to keep researching on my topic and spread even more awareness on it. I would have liked to of interviewed patients to gain their perspectives but there was never a good time to do so. New opportunities that wait for me when I go back to FSU include shadowing at the Tallahassee Orthopedic Center as well as possibly working for the Tallahassee hospital!
