Recap and What’s Next by Ava Jones

My boss and I at LeMoyne working on labels for an exhibit that recently went up!

If we take final exams, rigid deadlines, and anything of that nature out of the equation, I’d honestly say that most of the great projects in our lives and in community never reach a conclusion. When it comes to work that embedded in passion, people, and growth, their lifetimes usually transcend not just deadlines, but people, too. The betterment of society through community development is passed down generationally through people willing to dedicate their lives to it. In such a polarized world, where we currently seem to be on the downward slope of what I like to call the “societal justice bell curve”, it’s important to remember the many times we’ve been here before, and the people whose community engagement put us back on the rise. So, I agree. The project is never finished, because the world never stops moving, whether that be forwards to backwards.

As this summer winds down, I’m feeling quite optimistic about where I am within the Tallahassee art community. I’ve met wonderful people in these past 2 months, people that I plan to continue working with. I’m likely going to extend my internship at LeMoyne across this next semester or the following spring, and next week I’m workshopping with a lovely woman, Eydi Meyers, who I met through LeMoyne. She’s an artist from Boca who taught for 20 years, with the most lovely outlook on life and the most whimsical ways of expressing it. Just last week I had a lovely Sunday lunch with her, where we talked for hours about the practice of introspection in art and what it does for the soul. After, she insisted (though I made no move to refuse) on giving me about 15 tubes of Golden Artist Acrylics, and told me I better get a move on using them. I’m looking forward to going back to her studio next week and working alongside someone as wise and wonderful as her. This is just the type of community I dreamed of finding this summer, and I plan to keep it thriving.

My next semester at FSU is looking bright; I’m starting my workshops for Digital Media Production, but as I mentioned I’m also looking to continue my time at LeMoyne. I’ve also been motivated by a particularly creative summer to submit my work so some of our literary organizations, and I’d like to get involved in the creative direction of one of our campus magazines. I don’t know exactly what’s in store, but I plan for it to be very bright 🙂
