Last week was full of training for my new job, and it was definitely a lot of learning and preparation! But on Sunday, game time officially started! We welcomed the girls into the house, helped them get settled, had orientation, and ended the day with a super fun afternoon at District 850. It was such a great way to break the ice and get to know each other better. Today was their first official day of summer classes, and seeing them step into this new chapter makes me so excited for everything that’s ahead.
My biggest goal this summer is to impact someone. If even one of these girls leaves this program believing in themselves a little more, I’ll consider my job done. I also care deeply about their education and growth, so I want the workshops to be both fun and meaningful. I’m hoping to create moments that stick with them — whether it’s something they learned, a connection they made, or just a day they laughed a lot. These goals not only reflect what I believe in but also help push the program forward.
On a more personal note, just meeting them, hearing their stories, and getting to be a small part of their journeys has been so special already. Another one of my goals is to increase the program’s social media presence. While this is closely related to my major and professional interests, it also feels like a way to give the girls visibility and voice — something that can open doors for them and remind them that their stories matter.
Two big skills I’ll be focusing on during this experience are teamwork and leadership. Nothing would work without the support of my coworkers, and I’ve learned that collaboration is everything. I’m also learning what it truly means to lead — not just by giving directions, but by setting an example, listening, and showing up every day for these girls.
Okay, can I be cheesy here for a second? If I had to choose a song for this experience, I’d go with “Never Grow Up” by Taylor Swift. Watching these teenage girls grow, dream, and prepare for their future really makes me reflect — I can’t believe it’s already been two years since my mom dropped me off at FSU. Time goes by so fast. It’s so bittersweet, but I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.
