3,2,1 Goals

Three things I want to try/do during my summer experience are catch someone doing graffiti, visit the graffiti locations my French teacher Dr. Joos recommended to me, and I want to buy a baguette and have a picnic in a park. I’ve never seen someone in the process of doing graffiti, so I would love to see that. The locations Dr. Joos recommended sound really interesting and full of meaningful graffiti, for example, the bridge where during the Franco-Algerian, a peaceful protest became a bloody scene after the police responded with force against protesters. This happened around 60 years ago, and people still commemorate this site with messages about that war, police, current events, etc. Now, the picnic with a baguette, I just want to do for me. It feels very Parisian, and I really want to walk around with a baguette in hand.

The first two help me move my project forward because it gives me valuable material, the last one is just personal to me; like a bucket list item.

Two skills I want to work on are my communication skills and my critical thinking skills. Communication wise, I want to improve my French skills in order to better communicate with locals. There are much fewer English speakers than I expected, but it’s honestly great because then I can use my English as a crutch and I have to use my French. I also must set up an interview with a woman who has given us a couple tours, who is also friends with Dr. Joos and specializes in street art. Communication skills will be useful here as I need them to be able to ask the right questions and in the right way. I also want to ask my French teacher here in Paris and possibly one of my fellow FSU French Intensive students what they noticed about graffiti while here, and once again, communication skills will be useful when asking if I may ask them some questions.  Critical thinking wise, I must analyze the graffiti I’ve been taking pictures of and think about what the intention behind them is. I must also search what certain phrases and acronyms that I see often mean. Finally, I must synthesize all the information I’m gathering; how does it all tie together? I already have some thoughts and some resources I want to check out, I just have to get on it. This program is called intensive for a reason, we have not stopped!

I will share with you here some of the graffiti I’ve come across and a song that encapsulates how I’ve been feeling. I’ve been feeling very hyped and “dancey,” so I’ve been listening to a lot of house music, leaning more towards deep house. Enjoy! (Pictures in different file)
