Meet Marly

By Marly Michel

Hello, everyone! My name is Claude-Marly Michel, but I prefer to go by Marly. I’m currently a second-year Biological Science with minors in Chemistry and Psychology. I’m from the vibrant city of Miami, Florida, which has not only shaped my identity but also fueled my passion for healthcare and community service.

As I progress through my studies, I’ve developed a keen interest in the intricacies of primary care and preventive health. My ultimate aspiration is to attend medical school and become a primary care physician. I believe that primary care is the cornerstone of a functional health system, as it allows for a comprehensive approach to patient care that addresses both physical and mental health needs. Growing up in Miami, I’ve witnessed firsthand the disparities in health access among various communities, and these experiences have shaped my commitment to advocating for equitable healthcare.

This summer, I am thrilled to participate in an internship with a local health organization that focuses on community wellness and preventive care initiatives. This opportunity directly relates to my ambition to work in primary care, as I will be actively involved in programs designed to promote health education, resource access, and preventive strategies in underserved areas. I believe that by working on the ground level, I can gain a profound understanding of the challenges and barriers that many individuals face in accessing healthcare services. This hands-on experience is a vital step toward my goal of becoming a well-rounded and empathetic physician.

One of my primary expectations for this internship is to enhance my understanding of community health dynamics. I am eager to learn how various socio-economic factors influence health outcomes and to identify effective strategies for overcoming these barriers. Engaging with community members and healthcare professionals will allow me to observe the complexities of healthcare delivery and the diverse needs of patients. I hope to develop strong communication skills that will enable me to connect with individuals from different backgrounds.

Furthermore, I expect this experience to foster my growth as a future healthcare provider. I want to learn how to approach medical issues with sensitivity and an open mind. Collaboration with a diverse team of healthcare professionals will provide valuable insights into patient-centered care, and I anticipate gaining knowledge from their experiences and perspectives. Being involved in real-life healthcare situations will challenge me to think critically and adapt to the complexities of patient needs.

However, there are also aspects of this experience that make me feel a bit uncertain. For instance, I sometimes worry about my ability to make a meaningful impact in such a short timeframe. Working with people who may be dealing with serious health challenges can be intimidating, and I want to ensure that I am genuinely contributing to their care and support. Additionally, I’m not entirely sure what specific roles and responsibilities I will assume in the internship, which leaves me feeling a bit anxious about not fully grasping what is expected of me.

Despite these uncertainties, I try to approach this summer with an open heart and mind. I recognize that every challenge offers a learning experience, and I’m eager to embrace what comes my way. I genuinely believe that this internship will provide me not only with practical skills but also with a deeper understanding of the importance of empathy and compassion in healthcare.

Overall, I am excited about the journey ahead and look forward to sharing my experiences with all of you. Engaging in community-focused work aligns with my passion for healthcare and my commitment to making a positive difference in people’s lives. I know that this summer will be filled with opportunities for personal and professional growth, and I am eager to see where this path takes me. Thank you for allowing me to introduce myself!
