Photography Project in the Dominican Republic

By Sean Eaves, SUNY Oneonta

Hello! My name is Sean, and I am from Upstate New York! I am currently attending SUNY Oneonta studying a Bachelors in Fine Art with a concentration in Photography!

Currently in my free time I spend a lot of it taking photos, go figure right? Usually if I have the day of from work I find some sort of interesting place in the upstate area to photograph! Ill pick a random direction and just drive til I find something worth stopping for! But if I’m not taking photos I usually am trying to do something that gets me up and active, I really enjoy hiking and going to the gym but if I’m feeling a bit laid back that day I’ll spend some time indoors watching photo videos and movies to get some inspiration for my personal or upcoming projects. Overall though photos are my passion, they always have been. I have been taking photos for the last 10 years of my life constantly and in the last 3 years I have taken it a lot more seriously and professionally. Inevitably I would love my passion to turn into my career.

My topic for this project is how the impacts of tourism impact coastal areas, will mainly be focusing on portraits and landscapes when it comes to the photo work but when it comes to the more research based side of everything Ill be getting viewpoints from local businesses and just people in general on how they feel the impacts of tourism have efected their homes/ areas. Hopefully when I get there I can kick everything of with some interviews with some locals to get the ball rolling for my project. So currently my travel Plans are leaving for the Dominican Republic on June 15th then returning to NY on the 22nd. SO, about a full week for a photo assignment!

The main thing I am looking forward to is seeing another country! I have never left upstate NY really and I feel like this will be not only really awesome for personal growth but also to assess my limits as a photographer! The only thing I am worried about is the out-of-the- country aspect, since I have never left the US before its quite worrying, but I am sure everything will be simply fine. AS for making the most of it, I just think going with the flow will help me get there. Going out of my way to interact with people in the Dominican Republic I feel will aid me the best when it comes to getting the story. I feel like over stressing the situation and trying to live by a super complex schedule would just get in the way of things.
