Showing Up in D.C.: Thoughts from a 19-Year-Old Intern
I’m writing this from my hotel room in Washington, D.C., still trying to process that I actually made it here. My internship for the Congressman doesn’t start for two more weeks but I had the opportunity to come to DC beforehand. I landed around 6pm today and, before even unpacking, made my way straight to the White House. I ended up catching the sunset there, which honestly felt like something out of a movie.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea of “spheres of impact.” Basically, how the way we take care of ourselves affects how we show up for other people. It sounds simple, but it’s something I’ve really had to learn firsthand. If I’m not taking care of myself—mentally, emotionally, whatever—it’s way harder to show up fully for others. And especially in spaces like this, where people are constantly sharing big, sometimes heavy things, it can be a lot to carry if you’re not grounded.
That’s something I’m keeping in mind this summer. I want to be there for others, I want to help, and I want to make an impact; however, I also know I can’t do that if I’m burnt out or not okay myself. So this season is about balance. I’m learning that showing up for me is actually one of the best ways I can show up for everyone else, too.
This internship is such a cool opportunity, and I want to make the most of it. There are thousands of individuals who have had internships for the United States House of Representative, yet I want this experience to be truly unforgettable and to hopefully stand out. That means more than just completing tasks or checking boxes. I really want to connect with the people around me by asking good questions, seeking advice, and just staying curious. I want to be intentional with my time and use this experience to grow in every way I can, not just professionally, but personally too.

I really connected with your reflection on how taking care of yourself impacts the way you show up for others. That’s something I’ve been learning too — especially in spaces where there’s a lot of emotional or mental energy involved. It’s great that you’re going into your internship with that awareness already in mind. I also really admire your intention to stay curious and make the most of your time in D.C. You’re right — it’s not just about completing tasks but about how you grow through the experience. Excited to see how it unfolds for you!
