Meet Sofia!

Hi everyone! My name is Sofia Tascón, a pre-law student at FSU studying Political Science and English. I’m from Orlando, FL and am very excited to be traveling across the globe to Valencia, Spain this summer as a part of FSU’s International Programs! As an English major, I will be an intern for FSU Valencia’s Editing, Writing, and Media Program where a few other interns and I will write for the Nomadic Noles Magazine. This is related to my community-based interest of the political environment and my community group of not only Hispanic individuals, but individuals of my own heritage, as I am both Puerto-Rican and Spanish. My father was born and raised in Leon, Spain, therefore learning more about their government is a topic that interests me greatly. I will be interviewing Spanish citizen locals in Valencia, Spain to ask about their knowledge and feelings regarding the Spanish monarchy as well as their attitudes towards voting in Spain’s national elections. This investigation will go hand in hand with the international relations and government structures I have been learning within my studies of Political Science.

I am very excited about my experience, I expect to learn a lot regarding how a monarchy works alongside a parliament in general as American political courses do not spend intensive time periods teaching about the monarchy and the power dynamics at play with the parliament. It will be very cool to conduct an intensive focus study on another style of government. Most people like me often just think of the Queen of England when I think of royalty in government. I also am excited to learn how valuable or important voting is to Spanish citizens, if they feel they have a voice, if they actually care, etc. These are questions I truly do not know the answer to, therefore I am looking forward to immersing myself in Spain for weeks to learn. I am expecting to also practice my heritage Spanish, therefore I look forward to strengthening my skills with the new people I converse with daily. The only thing I have am unsure of for my experience is the exact questions I will ask yet, as that writing is something I will narrow down and specify during May (after finals). However, I have general ideas of what I will ask that I will convert into these questions. I am looking extremely forward to this experience!
