Art is one of the most powerful conduits for reflection, empathy, and change. My project, which examines an interplay between identity and safety through the everyday contents of women’s handbags, stands at the intersection of art and social consciousness. Throughout my series of paintings, I aim to illuminate broader themes of personal identity and societal pressures, particularly in the context of violence against women.
Handbags are personal sanctuaries that carry the essentials of daily life and deeply meaningful items that speak to our identities and experiences. The contents of handbags can reveal a great deal about someone’s personality, values, and realities that they may face. From practical items like keys and phones, to personal keepsakes, and even self-defense tools, each object tells a story. This artistic exploration fosters a deeper understanding of each other. It reveals the common threads that bind us and the unique ways in which individuals respond to their environments. By inviting viewers to look closely at the contents of these bags, the paintings become a medium through which we can connect with the experiences and challenges of others, promoting empathy and solidarity.

In the field of contemporary art, my work contributes to dialogues on identity and social issues. It prompts reflection of how societal pressures and the need for safety influence personal choices and the way individuals present themselves to the world.
On a personal level, this project has revealed a myriad of ways in which people construct and protect their identities. It has taught me the importance of paying attention to the small, often overlooked details that shape our lives. For the viewers of my work, I hope these paintings encourage a similar sense of curiosity and empathy. By engaging with the detailed depictions of handbag contents, viewers are invited to step into the shoes of others, to consider what these objects might mean to their owners, and to reflect on their own personal narratives. This shared exploration can foster a greater sense of connection and understanding, breaking down barriers and building bridges between diverse experiences.
Moreover, by employing collaboration and convenience sampling, I have been able to incorporate my fellow FSU students and friends, fostering a real sense of community that has strengthened many of my bonds.
In a world where we are often divided by our differences, art has the power to remind us of our shared humanity. By shining a light on the everyday realities of people’s lives through their bags, I hope to foster greater understanding and inspire positive change.
