My Last Moroccan Week

As I am initiating my last week in Morocco, never had I imagined I would be doing an internship in Africa, it just feels surreal. From the new people I have met, to the many places I have visited, this will be a summer to remember. The cultural environment around me has challenged me to expand my mind and step out of my comfort zone. I have learned so much from people around me and other cultures and I will carry these experiences my whole life.

The many experiences I have had have made me reflect and look at the world differently, especially one experience I had this past week. I was able to meet some kids who are part of REMESS’ English teaching program. Upon sharing a moment with the kids, they inquired about my religious background and became perplexed when learning we had different religious beliefs. I could feel the tension in the space. However, I took this opportunity to teach them about different cultures and how many religions vary from region to region in the best way possible. Reflecting on this experience, I realized there is so much about the world to know, and the only way to learn about it is by experiencing it yourself. Had the kids not met me, they probably would have not known about this at an early stage in their lives. I realized that education and awareness are the best ways to promote respect among different cultures and mannerisms. As citizens of the world, we share the space with so many individuals; having better cultural awareness and kindness is the best way to be responsible citizens and caring for eachothers.

Working at REMESS has given me room to learn a lot and it has inspired me to do my capstone project on the Social and Solidarity Economy, which is what their work focuses on. However, I have not started on my capstone project yet. I have decided to take care of this after I go back home and enjoy my last few days in Morocco and at the agency. I have made sure to think of possible questions that may pop up when doing the project so I can have all the information possible. Overall, the people at REMESS have been amazing at supporting me and my collegiate goals!

With love,

from Rabat!
