At the beginning of my trip, I spent most of my time exploring the city of Tokyo. Now that I’m settling into my routine, I’m noticing all the little habits and routines that I’ve developed. I typically start my day with a trip to the 7/11 store, which is conveniently located around the corner from my dorm. It’s where I pick up breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
A few streets over is Baba, the city we are staying in, located in the Shinjuku prefecture. It’s a bustling and diverse city, with people of all ages. Right next to my dorm is an elementary school, and I also see older ladies doing their shopping at the local supermarket, as well as college students grabbing late-night snacks at the 24-hour supermarket, an event that I often partake in ;).
In Baba, I often visit Sakae-Dori Street, particularly for late-night meals and quick bites for lunch and dinner. The street is always lively, being located near the train station.
My time here in Tokyo has made me appreciate the little details that make up our daily lives; the daily commutes, and the familiar store. Reflecting on these everyday spaces leaves me curious about how they will change and evolve over time. Unfortunately, I won’t be here to witness those changes, but I hope to return to Baba one day.
