Shining a Light on Solitary Confinement: The Urgent Need for Prison Reform

My research on solitary confinement significantly contributes to the larger conversation in the field of criminal justice and corrections, particularly focusing on the long-neglected issue of prison reform. By providing a comprehensive and systematic examination of the social and legal impacts of solitary confinement, my work revitalizes a decades-long conversation that has been forgotten for far too long. It emphasizes the need to scrutinize how our prisons treat incarcerated individuals, recognizing that, despite their incarceration, they remain citizens who deserve to be seen and treated humanely.

Utilizing literature from respected and credible sources, my research aims to bridge gaps in existing literature, adding validity and strength to my claims. This robust foundation enables me to showcase that solitary confinement is not just a matter of concern within the confines of a cell but has far-reaching implications for society as a whole. My academic voice highlights the adverse effects of solitary confinement on social reintegration and recidivism rates, advocating for more humane and effective approaches to incarceration. By informing policymakers, correctional administrators, and legal advocates about the long-term consequences of solitary confinement, my research has the potential to inspire further studies and discussions among academics, encourage reforms in correctional policies, and ultimately contribute to the development of more rehabilitative and less punitive practices within the criminal justice system. It brings insight into how the conditions within prisons, such as solitary confinement, impact crime rates, familial structures, and the overall well-being of individuals in society upon release. Moreover, my research can influence those around me by fostering greater awareness and understanding of the complexities of solitary confinement.

I’m hoping that by partaking in this research and receiving an Idea Grant, combined with having a stage and platform like Florida State University with its prominence and stature, I can help shine a light on this issue. My work not only enriches academic discourse but also has practical implications for improving the lives of incarcerated individuals and enhancing the overall effectiveness of correctional practices. By shedding light on the broader societal impacts, my research underscores the importance of seeing and addressing the needs of incarcerated citizens, contributing to a more informed and compassionate approach to prison reform. This research may impact those around me by highlighting how conditions found in prisons, such as solitary confinement, affect crime rates, familial structures, and overall community dynamics. It emphasizes that solitary confinement’s effects extend beyond the prison walls, influencing the broader social fabric and highlighting the necessity for comprehensive prison reform.
