Hello everyone! As part of my ongoing reflections for the Global Scholars Program at Florida State University (FSU), this week I’ll be discussing my cultural environment in Dublin, Ireland, and how my experiences have shaped my understanding of community.
Cultural Environment in Dublin
Dublin is a city rich in history and culture, offering a vibrant and welcoming environment. The mix of historic sites, lively pubs, and diverse communities creates a unique cultural tapestry. The Irish people are known for their friendliness and hospitality, making it easy to feel at home.
Joining a New Community
Yes, I do feel like I have joined a new community. The sense of belonging started at University College Dublin (UCD) where I am conducting research with my program instructor and a PhD student. The collaborative nature of our work fosters a strong sense of solidarity and support.
Beyond the academic environment, I’ve connected with other UCD students and locals. Engaging in social activities, such as attending concerts and exploring the city, has helped me build friendships and integrate into the local culture.
Shaping My Concept of Community
This experience has significantly reshaped my concept of community. Previously, my understanding was primarily based on geographic proximity and shared activities. However, being in Dublin has taught me that community extends beyond physical boundaries. It’s about shared goals, mutual support, and cultural exchange.
The determination of students involved in the Palestine protests on campus, for instance, has shown me the power of collective action and solidarity. Although I haven’t participated, witnessing their unity and commitment has been inspiring.
Conclusion
My time in Dublin has enriched my understanding of what it means to be part of a community. It’s about connection, support, and shared experiences. As I continue my research and exploration, I look forward to deepening these bonds and contributing to this vibrant community.
