Structural Inequalities: Boggy Bears and Afghans!

Hello! You may be asking yourself… What is a boggy bear? Camp Boggy Creek states on their website “When our campers arrive at Camp Boggy Creek… they are greeted with their very own Boggy Bear and Afghan. Each bear and afghan are made with TLC and each one is unique, just like our campers. Groups from all around the United States get together to craft these comforting bears and twice a year, they converge at Camp to stuff the bears with fluff and love.”

Another hat I wear at my job as a camp operations assistant is I oversee the bulk of inventorying and transporting the bears to their home on camp! This is a very fun part of my job because I get to see all the unique bears that people spend their time crafting for our campers.

Sewing and crocheting are not as popular as they used to be. With that being said we love and cherish each donation of boggy bears and afghans as they are truly priceless and a seminal part of every camper experience.

Camp Boggy Creek caters to a very specialized population of children who may not always feel like they belong in traditional social settings. Some have visible medical devices that other kids view as being “different”. Here at camp they just get to be kids. One thing all the campers have in common across illness groups is their Boggy Bears. We are very thankful to The Villages Sewing Club for their generous donations year after year because without them we would not be able to cultivate the safety, respect, and love that the bears stand for.

For my capstone project, I want to focus on the environment of each meal we have at camp. My background in psychology focuses on eating behaviors and body image and I am excited to share what I learn throughout the rest of my summer at camp!
