Hello again! A lot has happened since my first blog, and I am excited to share both the triumphs and challenges I’ve encountered along the way.

One of the biggest surprises so far has been adjusting to a new summer schedule. With the semester over, I naively thought I’d have more free time to dedicate to painting. However, I quickly realized that without the structure of my usual academic routine, staying disciplined with my art practice was more difficult than expected. Balancing other commitments and finding a consistent rhythm for my work has proven to be a challenge.
Additionally, coordinating with my research subjects – my friends who have generously agreed to share the contents of their purses – has been more complex than anticipated. Everyone’s summer plans, jobs and other unexpected life happenings make it tough to find mutually convenient times to meet and gather the necessary reference materials.
To prevent these hurdles from hindering my progress, I’ve implemented some new strategies. I’ve decided, rather than sticking to a rigid timetable, I’ve developed a flexible schedule that accommodates my varying daily commitments. By setting weekly goals instead of daily ones, I ensure that I stay on track without feeling overwhelmed. Also, rather than completely finishing a painting before I start working on the next one, I have decided to begin work on the entire series, allowing time for coordination with my research subjects without wasting any time.
Amidst these challenges, there have been some incredible highlights. Most notably, I recently exhibited my second painting, Andy, in the THOM Collective at the Thomasville Center for the Arts in Thomasville, Georgia and won Best in Show! This recognition has been immensely encouraging and has reinforced my belief in the importance and impact of my project. Seeing my work appreciated by others motivates me to keep pushing forward, despite any obstacles.

Moreover, the process of completing and exhibiting my second painting taught me a lot about my technique and themes I want to explore further. The positive feedback has provided valuable insights that I will incorporate into my future pieces.
As I continue with my project this summer. I am committed to staying adaptable and resourceful. The hurdles I’ve encountered have taught me the importance of flexibility, and by maintaining open communication with my subjects and being kind to myself when plans shift, I’m confident that I can overcome any future challenges.
Hi Nicolina! I have also struggled with adjusting to a set summer schedule and understand what you are going through. I think you were smart to set goals for each week instead of having a set schedule, allowing flexibility for different circumstances. I will have to give that a try!
