Amongst my family, correlating it to my own summer experience, both of my parents are immigrants. They always mentioned their own story by expressing how their own home countries did not have the certain opportunities they were looking for like the United States. During my summer experience, I was able to see through the perspective of the students I taught in Guatemala this was true. Yet, they were still immensely hardworking and considerate individuals. During the last couple of weeks in Guatemala in my stay, it was time for the presidential elections. It was said that you had to be safer in the areas you stayed or travelled in, meanwhile one of the media news is that Guatemala police raided the office of one of the leading presidential candidates in the race. Much like other international news, they usually do not receive so much coverage because U.S. media focuses further on local coverage.
For my draft, I decided it was best to contact the teacher I was closest with meanwhile volunteering in Pavarotti helping her class. Additionally, voicing things the students had told me to be able to highlight how important they were in shaping my summer experience. Much to my surprise, my Capstone is not solely based on environmentalism, instead I shifted towards a cultural lens that demonstrates the opportunity of being with such a community in the summer.
