Rediscovering My Cultural Community

Since I ended up staying in Tallahassee for my experience, I didn’t think I would end up entering a different environment or community for my experience. Unexpectedly, I have had new experiences with the Tallahassee community through some of the outreach and engagements I have done with PeaceJam. For example, I have entered new neighborhoods through Pop-Up Preschool , experienced new parts of Florida State through tabling, and been a part of community forums. Throughout all of this, I have had the opportunity to meet new people and truly engage with the community. Prior to this experience I had engaged with some parts of the Tallahassee community, but through PeaceJam, my perspective of the community has only expanded. This has reshaped my concept of community because before this I don’t think I really felt connected to Tallahassee as my community. Seeing as though Tallahassee is not my hometown, I always thought of this community as temporary. This experience has taught me that, though I might not be in Tallahassee forever, I can still engage with the community and want to make sustainable change for its members.
