Since moving to this small beach community, I have observed two prominent areas where solidarity is notably strong: beach conservation and addressing hunger. Living in such a close-knit community fosters a sense of responsibility among its members to support and assist one another. This collective mindset has facilitated the success of organizations like BEAM, which thrives due to the dedication of a committed group of volunteers. Additionally, during my gap year, I had the privilege of volunteering with a local beach conservation group that relied entirely on the efforts of volunteers. In my experience, both these issues—beach conservation and hunger—are effectively addressed when the community unites and works together to combat them. Solidarity in my town looks like donating clothes and food to local pantries and thrift stores, taking time to pick up trash on the beaches, and finding time to volunteer within the community.
