Work, Work

I FINALLY MADE IT! My first week here is relaxing and taking in the Ghana environment while enjoying the new people around me. My favorite thing so far is waking up with the sun, it feels so refreshing and I feel ready to take on the day. Although, I feel like it’s because I’m just excited about the trip. My transition is going great and so far no issues, I hope this continues. I have been meeting plenty of others who are a part of the same volunteer house but they all have different projects like medical, construction, teaching, sports, law, and others. They come from all corners of the world like the Netherlands, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, and so many other places. I am the only black “American” and I will explain why I put quotations on American later on but they did not treat me any less and embraced me with open arms.

My typical schedule so far has been waking up at 6:30 (I snooze up until 6:50) and getting ready by 7:15 am. I shower at night to remain cool and just get up in the morning and refresh. I go downstairs and say good morning to those who are up and my colleague, Chris, and we walk to the shelter which is about 3 minutes away we get our breakfast and order our Bolt. Our chef goes by the name of Grandma, she works and takes care of the children at the shelter and cooks our meals every day. We wait for our Bolt that arrives at the perfect time and we head to work. The ride is about 1 hour and a half long depending on traffic cause it’s honestly terrible. There are no streetlights and it’s organized chaos because everybody drives crazy but controlled in a way. I take a nap and catch up on sleep or just talk to Chris. Going to the office has been fun although I am still warming up to everybody and still getting to know everyone but they are all funny and call me Obinny. I have been warned that anyone who does the Civil Law project is the first to leave the house but the last to come back… I come back so tired and hungry. There is nothing hard, I am still getting into the routine though.
