Within the community of Tallahassee, with the focus of my volunteering at Second Harvest of the Big Bend, there seems to be a solidarity of helping those and stopping hunger within the community and many neighboring counties in north Florida. This issue is most prominent recently with the increased production and packaging of food to many different communities.
At Second Harvest, they are involved with the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which helps many elder populations, who are deemed in the lower income bracket, to receive a box of different foods to help provide for them and to receive the proper nutrition. Recently, Second Harvest doubled their packaging of these boxes, where with the help of volunteers like myself, help pack 50,000 pounds of food to be distributed to the different counties in northern Florida. They have even picked up new counties to provide food too and increasing their packaging shifts.
At the end of the day, I have grown a love for Second Harvest and the purpose they have to helping those in the community. Every Tuesday and Thursday, I am so excited to go to my shift and provide any help that I can, even if I am helping indirectly. I leave excited for my next shift and happy that I was able to make a difference in the community that took me in when I moved to Tallahassee!
Till next week!
