Last week of my program! This week was much less busy. I presented a project on melanoma with a group of three other people. In sum, the project analyzed a town that had poor access to health professionals, most not having insurance due to much of the population being migrants and not being able to afford treatment that was easily a hour away. We had to create a solution for the dilemmas of the town. Additionally, the town was a food desert with limited access to quality food
Our group decided that mobile markets and mobile clinics would be efficient for the immediate issues the town faced. As for long term solutions, we also determined that dual enrollment, school counselors, and a recreational center would generate wealth and wellness for the community. Sadly, our project did not win. But the project that did win was very well thought out; they had created a school curriculum, recommended books for the students, and more highly detailed plans.
On the last day of programming, the 22nd of June, we had a ceremony in which we all wore white coats and walked across the stage. We had to give them back at the end and I do not have a picture of it on a person, but attached is a picture of how it looked, albeit wrinkled.
Overall I had an interesting four weeks in Gainesville. Also, I now have a UF ID. I think my project I will present for Global Scholars will be on C-sections based on the information from this program. It might also be based on the remote research position I got thanks to this program, combining neuroscience with biostatistics. For next summer, I hope to do even more intensive research!
