My routine as an anti-trafficking intern varies a lot per week. My main job is to assist the caseworkers with our clients and collaborate with other interns to get things done. A typical day for me would start by checking in with my supervisor to see what I should do for the day. Sometimes I’ll help with different projects or tasks that will take days and maybe even weeks, while other days I’ll just pick up different tasks within departments. I have 1:1 meetings with my supervisor weekly, and sometimes join calls with associates, clients, and other colleagues as different cases arise. I also spend quite some time translating texts and sometimes calls in Spanish as not everyone in our team is bilingual and a significant number of clients don’t speak English.
I do think that my favorite days on the job are whenever I have the chance to attend tabling or community engagement events with local organizations and other individuals in similar fields. It’s always a great opportunity to interact with the community and get to know my co-workers better. I get to learn a lot about the impact of our work and see the different ways other organizations in the area support each other.
