During the last week, I’ve had the chance to meet with the new family I will help mentor. The family is composed of 8 children, ranging from ages five to fifteen. They all have very different and unique personalities and interests, but some things in common: their favorite foods are burgers and pizza, they like soccer (though they’re torn between Ronaldo and Messi!), swimming, and basketball.
But for our first outing, they wanted to do a movie night. I set up a movie on the TV of my apartment and we made popcorn! When I asked them their favorite genre of movies, they said action and horror. So, I thought it was funny when the oldest brother chose to watch the Disney animated movie, Beauty and the Beast. We had a great time, and they all rated the movie 10/10.
This Saturday I will be taking them to a World Refugee Day event in Tallahassee. When I found out about this event, I was happy to see that this holiday was celebrated locally. To me, this symbolized solidarity in the Tallahassee community.
