My First Month Recap!

So far my first month of Summer has been going so smoothly and perfectly! I have been able to establish a strict routine in my week, where every week looks the same, keeping me motivated and not forgetting anything important. I have become really well established and known at Second Harvest and my internship at TNC.

During my time at both of these locations, I have noticed structural inequalities that exist. At Second Harvest, they provide the help and assistance to those who cannot afford food or warm meals, through donations from different grocery stores and people within the community. They are trying to make food more accessible to those who need it and trying to reduce the poverty gap within our community and many neighboring ones. Meanwhile, at TNC, I noticed that many people who are able to receive proper medical help, are those who are able to avoid it and have established insurance, but this something that is already a well-known problem in the United States.

With structural inequalities being prevalent, it creates my Capstone focus to be on poverty in healthcare and how many basic needs are not able to be met if one does not have the funds. This has been a debate for years about how the American health care system is broken and only helps those who can provide the funding.

The more and more I spend at Second Harvest, I really feel the impact that I am able to make by packing food boxes and sorting through good/ bad food, where I am helping people indirectly! I cannot wait to continue this throughout the rest of the year!

See you next week!
