The structural inequality that I have become more attuned to in the local Tallahassee is the access to quality education. Through PeaceJam, I have been able to work with Leon County Schools’ Pop-Up Preschool. Pop-Up Preschool brings free preschool programs to children 3-6 in the local Tallahassee community. These children have the opportunity to will learn motor skills, hand eye coordination and literacy components through fun, hands-on activities. The Pop-Up Preschool keeps the children’s brains working over the summer and prepares them for the next school year. While working with Pop-Up Preschool, I have seen children have the opportunity to learn and have fun, and I don’t believe this is an opportunity that they would’ve gotten otherwise, at least not for free. With that in mind, my subject for the Capstone Project is focusing on how non-profit organizations, like PeaceJam, use their curriculum and programs to promote community development and solve prevalent issues.
