Continuing my Transition as an IRC Youth Mentor

Map Source: Community Robotics, Education, and Technology Empowerment (CREATE) Lab(opens in a new tab). This interactive map visualizes the current refugee crisis.

As I continue my transition into my role as an IRC Youth Mentor, I have been brainstorming my Capstone Project, and how it might relate to my experience. In the Spring, I chose to examine the recent refugee crisis as part of my capstone, looking into the satisfaction of refugees depending on what part of the United States they immigrate to. I thought it would be interesting to look at refugees to move into diverse vs. low diversity areas. This means I would have to examine what diversity means in the context of being a refugee, and I am excited to pursue this further!

I also have gotten assigned new mentees since my last blog post. I will meet with them this week! My mentees are a 12 year old girl and boy (siblings). I can’t wait to connect with them and to learn about their interests.

Balancing this experience with my other commitments this summer has been challenging, but I’m proud of myself for managing it. I’m glad I picked a local experience, as I didn’t expect to be this busy. I just took the LSAT two days ago, and I am also working part time at the FSU Claude Pepper Center! I am glad this summer is keeping me active.
