Working With FSU’s PeaceJam Program

Since I last posted here, my experience has changed. I was a Media & Communications Intern with Ladies Learning to Lead (a position I am still holding), but I have now shifted to working with Americorps, through FSU’s Center for Leadership and Center, for the PeaceJam Program. So far, I have annotated HB999, completed some readings about Toxic Charity, done some reorganization work for The Center, and tabled at orientation!

Though I am extremely passionate about the work and love all my Center family (some that I have worked with since my start at FSU), transitioning into my position has been quite tough. First, it was the long hours, which I am not yet accustomed to. I have been falling behind on my class assignments and am having to drop a class due to the load I have subjected myself to. However, I do subscribe to the idea that we can adapt to just about any challenges put in front of us, so I am pretty sure that I will find ways to get more sleep at night and make the days go by quicker. Any tips would be appreciated!

Second, I fell sick with a flu-bug late last week. I won’t go into details, but it was one of the least fun life experiences I have had. I have not been to my experience site since 5:30pm on Wednesday, May 31st, and I started on Tuesday, May 30th. I have felt really guilty about being under the weather, which added to my stress. I needed documentation of illness, and my doctor’s office has not been very helpful in providing it. I will be returning to work on Monday, June 12th, and I am really excited!
