A slight change to my initial plan for my experience in the summer, I am still doing AmeriCorps but with a different organization (PeaceJam). My experience has been extraordinary thus far. I started on June 5th and immediately I was working with children in the Tallahassee community. For me the transition has been an interesting one but in a good way. I am grateful to be able to give back and help within low-income communities and make a difference whilst getting to know more about myself and grow as a leader and individual.
The main thing that is difficult about the transition is finding the time for everything and figuring out my scheduling. The biggest thing has been to adjust my sleep schedule since the days are pretty long with PeaceJam and I still have other obligations outside of it. I am currently figuring out how to incorporate time to work on class assignments while doing work for PeaceJam online since I don’t have much time to once I get home. However, I love the team that I am working with and they have made the transition pretty smooth for me. Activities that I have done so far is helping with a program called Pop-up Preschool that provides activities and an overall fun time for preschool students in low-income communities. I have also done tabling for The Center For Leadership & Service at the orientations for incoming Florida State students as well. I am very excited to see what this organization has for me moving forward in the summer!
