This past week, I started my service as an AmeriCorps Summer Vista with PeaceJam Southeast in the Center for Leadership and Service here at Florida State University. For my first couple of days, I became acclimated with the philosophies of PeaceJam and participated in my onboarding orientation for AmeriCorps. As I started to review the materials provided by PeaceJam, I became more familiar with the 10 Key Issue Areas and the 14 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates used to build the curriculum that PeaceJam enters the community with. I also read some articles on how to serve the community in a way that builds on the leadership and assets that already exist in the community.
On the last day of my first week, I had the chance to volunteer as a Family Facilitator for Whole Child Leon’s free developmental screenings for kids entering schools. As a Family Facilitator, I guided families and their children through the different developmental screenings and connected them with specific resources that they may need for their child. All in all, my first week allowed me to dip a toe into PeaceJam’s community work and learn some of their values.
