Learning How to Become a Youth Mentor-IRC

Mentoring with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has been such an educational experience, and I’ve loved getting to know my mentees. Before starting my role, I had to first had to go through a background check and short training. During this training, I learned about the role of the IRC, the process refugees go through to come to the United States, and what to do if I encounter any tough situations. The primary purpose of my role is to help my mentees get to know Tallahassee, and also be a guiding resource for my mentees to ask questions: either related to school, living in Tallahassee, or just daily life.

For the last couple of weeks, I have really enjoyed getting to know the family the IRC assigned me to. The family comprises six children, ranging in age from 6 to 16. In the family, there are three boys and three girls, all with fun and unique personalities and interests. It has been a fun challenge to find activities that suit all 6 of them. One thing they’ve asked me to help them with is homework. While they all enjoy reading and writing, they find math challenging (similar to my own preferences!). Soon, I will move on to a new family of mentees. As I reflect on my time with this family, I am grateful to have gotten to know them, and for them to generously allow me into their home and family. I am excited to hopefully positively impact a new group of mentees soon!
