This week, we are spotlighting UROP student Melanie Castro! She is a second-year student and is majoring in Biomedical Engineering. Outside of school, Melanie runs cross country and track for FSU. Additionally, she is passionate about cooking and baking for her friends and family. She also likes to play the cello in her free time. Melanie has utilized the UROP program to enhance her education and take advantage of research opportunities as an undergraduate student. This is an experience unique to our university, because often many college students do not have the opportunity to engage in research until graduate school. Currently, Melanie is working with Nolan Blackford on his research on high-throughput screening of RNA stability through differential scanning fluorimetry. Melanie is passionate about the research experiences she has gained through the UROP program: “My favorite part of UROP is taking part in the research and working alongside my mentor. My mentor has taught me applicable lab skills and many lessons that explain the machinery and chemical processes that we utilize in the lab.” In the remainder of her time at Florida State, she plans to continue research in biochemistry labs where she can continue to explore her passions for the next two years.
As a UROP student, Melanie recommends applying to the UROP program to any incoming freshman or sophomore. “UROP has been a very positive experience for me. I recommend any incoming freshman to apply. The program is structured well and it allows you to find a research project that you are interested in easily. There are many different projects to choose from that vary based on the area of study. You may choose a project that is related to your major or one that you are just particularly interested in. I appreciate the freedom you get in choosing your final research project.” Melanie is one example of how a student can gain valuable knowledge and experiences while excelling in her undergraduate education.
Thank you for your hard work, Melanie! We are so lucky to have you as a UROP student and cannot wait to see what you do next. #UROPleadersinactions #CRE #Thiscouldbeyou
